Boost your energy or relax to the scent of aromatherapy essential oils

Aromatherapy is simply the use of scents to affect the body and mind. Most often aromatherapy essential oils are heated in a diffuser, which allows the scent to diffuse into the air. Other methods of using aromatherapy essential oils include, adding them to your bath water and mixing them to make perfume. Some oils can be placed directly on the skin and massaged in to relieve pain. Peppermint is common for treating pain and sore feet.

The specific effects of different aromatherapy essential oils varies. Lavender is a very common oil that calms and releases strong emotions such as frustration, irritability, anxiety, hysteria and insomnia. Quite often oils will be mixed to create a blend that is meant to relax and calm the mind or increase feelings of sensuality.

When buying aromatherapy essential oils it is important to note any information that is offered about the use of the specific oil. Usually one or two drops is sufficient, as they are generally very potent. The most important thing to remember when choosing which oil to use, is that if you like the smell of jasmine and get headaches when you smell vanilla, use jasmine even if vanilla is supposed to be better.  In other words choose oils with scents that appeal to you.

When using essential oils you should treat them as drugs. They should never be taken internally and can be dangerous if used in undiluted forms. Also, if used regularly in large quantities or improperly they can have adverse affects. It is possible for essential oils to cause skin irritation such as rashes. It is best to consult an aromatherapy practitioner and to do as much reading and research of your own as possible.

Essential oils should be stored in cool, dark places, in dark glass bottles. Clear bottles are not recommended. Rubber eyedropper tops are not recommended either, as the rubber can become gummy. They are flammable, so you should keep this in mind when you are storing your essential oils.
