Gel Candles are made from a transparent gel, either gelled mineral oils or synthetic hydrocarbons, that can be tinted with color and given a scent. Because the gel never becomes truly solid, gel candles always come in a jar or glass container of some type. The containers can range in size from a small votive to a fish bowl.
Most often gel candles will have a figurine or ornament suspended in them. These can be sea shells or animals, sea creatures or flowers. Larger ones will even have a whole scene, perhaps an underwater one with sand, sea shells and a couple of little fish.
Gel candles can be very beautiful and unique. As their popularity is growing there is a greater variety available, which makes them excellent gift items.
One thing to look out for with gel candles is that they do not have a lead cored wick. In order for the wick to remain straight it will need to be cored. So, look for candles that have zinc or tin cored wicks. A lead wick will leave a small grey line on a piece of paper that is passed over it. If you can't test the candle yourself look for companies that clearly state that their candles are lead free, or send them an email with your question.
